Since 2009, the race has entered a new chapter under the name GranPiemonte, establishing itself as the ideal stepping stone towards Il Lombardia. Not every edition has favoured the climbers, however, with more sprint-friendly routes producing victories for Giacomo Nizzolo (2016), Sonny Colbrelli (2018) and Iván Cortina (2022). Philippe Gilbert inaugurated the race’s new era with back-to-back victories in 2009 and 2010, while the list of winners also includes major names such as Colombia’s Rigoberto Urán (2012) and Egan Bernal, who triumphed in 2019 shortly after winning the Tour de France, as well as Mexico’s Isaac Del Toro, the 2025 champion. In 2017, GranPiemonte also served as the Italian National Road Race Championships and was exceptionally held in June, with Fabio Aru claiming both victory and the coveted tricolore jersey before proudly showcasing it at that year’s Tour de France.

The race adopted the name GranPiemonte in 2009, and it was one of cycling’s greatest Classics specialists, Philippe Gilbert, who inaugurated the new roll of honour. He won the race in both 2009 and 2010, completing a prestigious GranPiemonte–Il Lombardia double on each occasion. Over the course of his career, Gilbert claimed four of cycling’s five Monuments: the Tour of Flanders (2017), Paris–Roubaix (2019), Liège–Bastogne–Liège (2011) and, as mentioned, Il Lombardia twice (2009 and 2010). His palmarès also includes three stage victories at the Giro d’Italia, one at the Tour de France, seven at the Vuelta a España and the UCI Road World Championship title in Valkenburg in 2012.
